ACTION ALERT!

Father Mychal Judge has been nominated for The Congressional Gold Medal in recognition of his heroic life and death. This is the nation's highest and oldest honor, first awarded to George Washington in 1776.

Story here. List of Gold Medal Recipients here. Text of the bill here.

Please contact your member of Congress today and ask them to "co-sponsor HR 2580", the Fr. Mychal Judge Congressional Gold Medal Act.

Ask your Congress member (US Representative) to contact Rep. Peter King's office to co-sign the Resolution. Two-thirds of the members of Congress must sign HR 2580 before it can be voted on.

To find your member of Congress and how to contact them, check here.

You should mention one or two reasons why the Medal should be awarded to Fr. Judge, and that this is a bi-partisan effort. (See sample letter below).

You'll have even more impact if you send the same message to all the members of Congress from your state, and if you ask friends to also contact Congress!

Fr. Mychal was a holy and humble man, but like Mother Teresa, he accepted awards during his lifetime because he knew that it would help the many causes he stood for.

Please take the few minutes to do this in Father Mike's memory, as he has done so much for all of us, even for those who never met him.

Thank you and God bless you,

Sample letter to Congress:

Dear Congressman (name),

I respectfully urge you to sign and co-sponsor HR 2580, an act to award The Congressional Gold Medal to the late Father Mychal Judge, New York fire chaplain and the "Saint of 9/11".

Fr. Judge was the first official casualty of the 9/11 attacks. But even before his heroic death on 9/11, his extraordinary works of mercy for the sick, the poor, and the displaced were legendary. Fr. Mychal Judge is well known in Catholic parishes and by firefighters everywhere.

Frankly, many athletes and entertainers have been awarded the Congressional Gold Medal for lesser accomplishments. The status of the Medal itself will be raised when it is awarded posthumously to Fr. Judge.

Congressman, we need you to co-sponsor this bill. Two-thirds of House members must sign on before the Medal can be awarded.

This is a bi-partisan. Like Fr. Mychal himself, this bill transcends partisan politics and religious denomination; it goes to the heart of who we should be as a nation.

Please contact Rep. Peter King's office to co-sign HR 2580.
I'd appreciate if you'd get back to me to let me know that you are co-sponsoring this bill.

Thanking you for your action,
(Your name & address)
